Discussion Director (Characters shoes)

Okeyy, I want you to put yourselfs in the Angela (the mom's) shoes, what would you do differently, would you try to find a job?, would you keep on having kids?, try to put yourself in her position and describe the things that you would and wouldn't do...

  1. I think that I have to respond to this blogspost also.. so..
Honestly If I had a husband like the one Angela had (Franks mom) I would leave him. He didnt work and when he did work he'll leave his family starving and would waste his money in the pubs.Like what kind of father is that, to let your addiction go so far that your not even feeding your children.Something that gets me really pissed off is the fact that Malachy and Angela kept on having Children. I know that back then there was no way of not gewtting pregnant, but they shoul'dve at leat holded the "temptations" back instead of bringing a child to the world who was going to starve to death.

  2. First of all I totally, 100% agree with Angela.

I think if I was Angela McCourt I would have never even gotten married to Malachy. From the begining of the book I could tell that it was not going to be a happy marriage. But if I was her and I did marry Malachy, I would have never gone back to Ierland, and after three of my children died I would never of had more that were going to suffer. I would also try to get a job for myself or go down to where Malachy worked every time he was getting paided and gotten the money before him. I couldn't even imagine having a husband that didn't care enough for his children. It is horrible what Frank, Malachy, Michael and Alphie, as well as Angela had to go threw.

  3. If I was Angela McCourt, I would take control of my husband. There's no use in believing that he would ever change, so I would follow him to work and get his paycheck personally, like she did once. If he kept finding other ways to get drunk and misbehave, I would dump his ass and find another way to support myself and my children. I think it's Angela's fault as much as it is Malachy's that they ended up the way they did. If she tried to fix her life at least slighthly, she would've lived differently. Instead, she went with the flow and ended up in a bad situation.

Another thing I would, or wouldn't do, is bear 4 children when I have trouble providing for one.. It's not hard to resist sex (for women, at least) and when you know about the consequences, you should be especialy motivated to do so.
